What Is BIMI?

BIMI stands for Brand Indicators for Message Identification. It is an email authentication standard that lets you display your brand logo next to your emails in supported inboxes. When a recipient sees your message, they also see your verified logo.

BIMI works on top of DMARC. Your domain must have a DMARC policy set to quarantine or reject before mailbox providers display your logo. This requirement ensures only authenticated senders get the visual branding benefit.

Gmail and Apple Mail both document BIMI support, with different certificate rules (compared below). In our October 2026 scan of the Tranco top 1,000, 161 domains published a BIMI record.

How BIMI Works

1. Enforce DMARC

Set your DMARC policy to p=quarantine or p=reject, with no pct below 100. BIMI requires enforcement before your logo appears in inboxes.

2. Publish a BIMI Record

Add a BIMI TXT record to your DNS at default._bimi.yourdomain.com. The record points to your SVG logo and your mark certificate.

3. Obtain a Mark Certificate

Apply for a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) or a Common Mark Certificate (CMC) from an authorized certificate provider. A VMC needs a registered trademark or government mark. A CMC does not; the most common route is proof the logo was on your website at least 12 months ago.

BIMI Requirements

DMARC p=quarantine or p=reject

Your domain must have a DMARC policy set to quarantine or reject. Subdomains must not be set to sp=none, and a leftover pct below 100 is not accepted. BIMI does not work with a p=none policy.

SVG Logo

Your logo must be an SVG file in the SVG Tiny Portable/Secure (SVG P/S) profile, with a square aspect ratio. Each mailbox provider decides the display size.

Mark Certificate (VMC or CMC)

Gmail accepts a VMC (logo with a checkmark) or a CMC (logo, no checkmark). Apple Mail needs a BIMI evidence document such as a VMC; Apple does not say whether a CMC counts. See the comparison below.

DNS TXT Record

Publish the BIMI record in your DNS at default._bimi.yourdomain.com. The record contains the https URLs for your logo and certificate.

VMC vs CMC: which certificate you need

Get a VMC if the logo is a registered trademark and the Gmail checkmark matters to you. Get a CMC if it is not registered: Gmail still shows the logo, just without the checkmark. For Apple Mail, Apple asks for a “BIMI Evidence Document” and gives a VMC as its example. It does not say whether a CMC counts.

Benefits of BIMI

Brand Visibility

Your logo appears next to every authenticated email you send. Recipients recognize your brand instantly in crowded inboxes.

Trust & Credibility

A verified logo signals authenticity. Recipients see your brand identity before they open the message.

Phishing Protection

When your legitimate emails display a verified logo, spoofed messages without the logo stand out. Recipients spot fakes faster.

Email Engagement

A familiar logo helps recipients notice your messages and recognize them as yours.
